Background
Plasma/serumcell-freecirculatingandviralnucleicacidhasthepotentialtoprovidebioMarkersforcertaincancersanddiseasestatesaswellasforthedetectionofviralinfection.Currently,significantadvancementsarebeingmadeinutilizingcfc-DNAasbiomarkersfortheearlydiagnosis,prognosisandmonitoringoftherapyforseveralcancertypesandautoimmunediseases.Cell-freemitochondrialDNA(cfmtDNA)isalsounderinvestigationforitsclinicalsignificance.Thiscfc-DNAisusuallypresentasshortfragmentsoflessthan1000bp.Inaddition,cell-freefetalDNAhasbeenwidelyusedasanon-invasivemethodforprenataldiagnosisincludingearlyidentificationoffetalsex,geneticstudiesforfamiliesathighriskforinheritedgeneticdisorders.screeningforRhesusfactor,screeningforaneuploidyandidentificationofpreeclampsiaExosomesare40-150nmmembranevesicles,whicharesecretedbymostcelltypes.Exosomescanbefoundinsaliva,blood,urine,amnioticfluidandmalignantasciticfluids,amongotherBIOLOGicalfluids.Evidencehasbeenaccumulatingrecentlythatthesevesiclesactascellularmessengers,conveyinginformationtodistantcellsandtissueswithinthebody.Theseexosomesmayplayafunctionalroleinmediatingadaptiveimmuneresponsestoinfectiousagentsandtumours,tissuerepair,neuralcommunicationandtransferofpathogenicproteins.ForthisreasonexosomalRNAsmayserveasbiomarkersforvariousdiseasesincludingcancer.AstheRNAmoleculesencapsulatedwithinexosomesareprotectedfromdegradationbyRNAsestheycanbeefficientlyrecoveredfrombiologicalfluids,suchasplasmaorserum.
